Our celebrated Abbey scribes have been very busy this year!

Malcolm Brown has written or compiled three books in 2005 on T. E. Lawrence, a subject which has interested him since 1962 and on which he is a renowned expert.

T.E.Lawrence in War and Peace was published in August by Greenhill Books.

The writings presented in this volume shed light both on the character of T. E.  Lawrence and the current situation in the Middle East. Despite being written more than seventy years ago, his thoughts remain remarkably pertinent.    The publication coincides with the 70th anniversary of Lawrence’s death in May 1935 and an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, where Malcolm is a consultant.

Lawrence of Arabia, the Life, the Legend was published in September by Thames & Hudson.

This book, and the major exhibition at the Imperial War Museum that it accompanies, combine to shed new  light on this enigmatic, contradictory and troubled man a character of universal appeal who lived on the edge in all that he did.

Lawrence of Arabia, Selected Letters was published in November by Little Books Ltd

Malcolm has compiled a new, updated version of the book he first produced in 1988, now seen as a classic selection of the letters of one of the great letter writers of the twentieth century.

Paul Sheppy, not to be outdone, has also had new works published, on his specialist subject of spiritual help for the grieving.

Cries of the Heart: a daily companion for your journey through grief was      published in October by Canterbury Press.

At some point, everyone will experience bereavement. Even when a death is  expected, it can be a bewildering and disorientating time and its intensity  increases if a death is sudden or if there are tragic circumstances.  Here Paul offers readings and reflections  to cover a wide range of commonly felt emotions and reactions, and  offers support and understanding.

Funeral Prayer Cards were also published in October by Canterbury Press.

When people come to a funeral, it may be the first time that they have entered a church or chapel for years. These simple cards with a profound Christian message are designed to be taken away by visitors. Inexpensive enough  to place on seats or in pews, they carry the comforting words of the gospel.

Sue Sheppy has also made her mark this year by contributing two books to a series published by David Fulton Publishers Ltd entitled Exploring Play

Flight

This exciting topic-based series offers a great opportunity for both parents and teachers as they seek to enhance the learning experience of their ‘early years’ students.
