Abbey People     The church is its congregation, not the building, not it’s paid staff. However, during the week you will probably meet three people who are there on a regular basis.

The Minister is The Revd Dr Paul. P. J. Sheppy, BD. who mostly answers to the name of Paul.  He was ordained in 1973 and before coming to Abbey served in four other ministries.

  • Youth Minister, Fuller Baptist Church, Kettering [1973-19760]
  • Chaplain, Oxford Brookes University (then Oxford Polytechnic) [1976-1981]
  • Minister, Burnly Lane Baptist Church, Burnley [1981-1988]
  • Minister, Barnoldswick Baptist Church, Barnoldswick, Yorkshire[1988-2001]

Paul has served on the Baptist Union Council as well as representing the Baptist Union on the Joint Liturgical Group (he was Secretary for eight years) from 1988 - 2001.  He has also represented the BU on the Churches’ Funerals Group since 1997.

Paul has written a number of hymns and liturgical texts. In 1997 the Canterbury Press published his book of daily prayers, Each Day, Each Night.  Canterbury also published his book of funeral resources, In Sure and Certain Hope, in the spring of 2003. A further book was published by Ashgate Publishing in 2004 to critical acclaim, entitled Death, Liturgy and Ritual.  This year (2005) he has turned his attention to the bereaved with his book, Cries of the Heart, published by Canterbury Press

The Administrator is John Chilvers who can generally be found in and around the Church Office. He is responsible for room hire and among many other things, for ensuring that the right pieces of paper are sent to the right places.  John has been a church member for many years and would be the person to speak to about using the church or for information about the church’s programme of events.

The Warden is Steve Hodge. He will ensure that any room that is booked is ready and set out in the required manner. If help is needed with equipment Steve is your man. He may even be able to find a car parking space  - though he’s not a miracle worker.

All three are at the church to help practically and spiritually.
